REAL ID Act
The REAL ID Act passed Congress in May 2005, creating a federal identity
document that every American will need in order to fly on commercial airlines,
enter government buildings, open a bank account, and more. Under the Act, states have until 2008
to get into compliance.
This legislation poses increased risk of
identity theft and privacy violations for every American, adds increased
barriers for the elderly and poor to get a license, puts battered women at risk,
affects businesses, and will lead to increased discrimination based on race and
legal status due to a legal presence requirement.
We anticipate that the Oregon Legislature will debate implementation of the REAL ID Act in the 2007 session. Stay tuned for how you can help defend
Oregon's most vulnerable communities and the privacy of all
Oregonians.
